Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Reno NV
157 AM PDT Thu Apr 17 2025
.KEY MESSAGES...
* A cold front brings gusty winds and cooler weather Thursday with
a few rain and snow showers mainly near the Sierra.
* Friday will be dry and cool with north breezes, before some
warming returns Easter weekend.
* Generally fair weather is expected next week with slightly above
average temperatures.
&&
.DISCUSSION...
A few showers continue over portions of the NV Basin and Range
early this morning, but these should end in the next hour or so.
Otherwise, mostly dry conditions are expected across the area
today. Although portions of the Eastern Sierra have a 10-25%
chance for showers and up to 15% chance of storms. This is a
result of the upper trough swinging down through the Great Basin
while absorbing the system that affected us yesterday.
The associated cold front will be passing through the area from
north to south today bringing gusty northerly winds and cooler
temperatures. Wind speeds will range generally between 15-25 mph
with gusts up to 40 mph. The strongest winds will be during the
afternoon hours over NV Basin and Range down to Mineral county.
Mineral county will have gusts close to 35-45 mph and greater
over the mountains ridges and southern slopes. Furthermore, cross
winds along portions of I-80, US-50 and portions of US-95 between
Hawthorne and Luning will lead to difficult driving conditions.
There is a very low chance (less than 15%) for blowing dust to
affect portions of Churchill and Pershing county. The main
inhibitor will be the lack of instability along with the colder
air mass being advected into the area.
An upper level ridge takes over on Friday as it slowly moves in
leading to the beginning of a warming and drying trend. However,
there is a series of weak upper level disturbances moving through
just north of our area which will not allow temperatures to get
too warm over the weekend and early next week. There could be a
few showers associated to these disturbances in northern NV and NE
CA, but any accumulations will be very light.

.AVIATION...
VFR conditions prevail across most of the area. May have a 10%
chance for MVFR conditions at KMMH due to isolated -SHRA/-TSRA.
There is also a 10-20% chance of fog developing near KTRK this
morning, but any fog should lift by 16Z. Winds will be from the
north with speeds 10-20 kts and gusts up to 30-35 kts. The
strongest winds will be associate to the frontal passage as it
goes from north to south. Winds will be subsiding after 3Z tonight
in most areas. However, there may be some breezes persisting in
the NV basin and range tomorrow night.
